Riccardo Levato is Associate Professor in Translational Bioengineering and Biomaterials at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Utrecht University, at the University Medical Center Utrecht, and principal investigator at the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht, the Netherlands. He holds a cum laude PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia and from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia.

His laboratory (https://www.levatolab.eu/ ) focuses on the development of novel biofabrication technologies and cell-instructive biomaterials to recreate in the lab advanced living tissue constructs and complex organoid-based structures. In 2020 he was awarded a Starting grant from the European Research Council on the development of a novel volumetric bioprinting technology, and since 2021 coordinates the European consortium ENLIGHT, dedicated to the development of synthetic biology-inspired solutions for tissue engineering applications.

He published more than 62 peer-reviewed articles international journals, and for his achievements in bioprinting and regenerative medicine, he was conferred several awards including the 2016 Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine Young Investigator Award, the 2021 Jean Leray award from the European Society for Biomaterials, and the 2022 Robert Brown award from the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society. He will support the 4DBR consortium as scientific advisor.
